Paris too far? New York too crowded? No worries—lovers of the latest in designer looks can get their fashion fix every March at Fashion Week El Paseo, centered around the luxurious El Paseo Shopping District in Palm Desert. Designers—from the best in couture to fledglings introducing edgy new looks—take part, giving you a head-spinning opportunity to see what’s the next big trend in men’s and women’s fashion. Resort wear is also featured—appropriate for Greater Palm Springs’ desert locale. This time of year, by the way, tends to be nicely warm but not hot.
Check the schedule to find the right fit for you: The slate of events includes a variety of trunk shows, cocktail receptions, and chances to hob-nob with designers and fashion-world personalities (recent years have featured stars from Project Runway). Each year, the opening show, “California Unzipped,” perfectly encapsulates what the event is all about: it showcases the collections of three diverse California designers with distinct styles that represent the breadth of the state’s fashion scene. Some events benefit local schools or organizations, and ticketed fashion shows and their after-parties, scattered around the Palm Springs area, offer another good excuse to explore the local resorts and iconic landmarks, like the Ritz-Carlton Rancho Mirage or the Palm Springs Art Museum.
Most events are free for the general public (see the schedule for details); individual admission to ticketed events ranges from about $75 to $100 (reserved seating). College students can typically get tickets for $35. Or, choose from Fashion Vacation packages that include admission to select events along with accommodations at nearby luxe hotels.
Insider tip: If you can’t get into the top shows, just hang out by the entrance before and after; you’re bound to see amazing outfits on fashion-industry attendees.
