California Questionnaire: Lesley Ann Warren

California Questionnaire: Lesley Ann Warren

The scene-stealing star of ‘Clue’ and ‘Victor/Victoria’ loves living in the San Fernando Valley, and takes full advantage of SoCal’s many coastal charms

Even though Lesley Ann Warren quips she’s “never been on a surfboard in my life,” the longtime California resident has been riding a wave of Hollywood success for decades. The triple-threat actor/dancer/singer made a major splash in the title role of Rodgers and Hammerstein’s 1965 version of Cinderella and has performed nonstop since then, including star turns in films such as Clue and Victor/Victoria, the latter of which earned her an Oscar nomination.

She’s also thrilled fans with stints on TV’s Mission: Impossible and Desperate Housewives, though she’s never desperate for fun things to do in the Golden State. Here, she shares her go-to spot for the world’s best fried oysters, her favorite high-tea escape, and the romantic adventures and activities she savors with her husband.

California Questionnaire, Leslie Ann Warren

Where do you live? I live in Los Angelesmuch-maligned San Fernando Valley

Why there? I actually love the Valley. When I bought my home 45 years ago, even though when I walked in the decor didn’t match my sensibilities at all, I fell in love with it. I’ve watched the Valley become more culturally aware and cool, and yet it remains a less fast-paced environment, which suits me.

Who or what is your greatest California love? I love the ocean. It’s always been my favorite place to unwind and realize the immense power of nature.

What is the biggest misperception about Californians? The misconception I hear most often is that Californians are lazy, not inner-directed, and don’t gravitate to cultural opportunities. All of the above is false.

What is the stereotype that most holds true? I guess that all Californians are beach bunnies, that their main focus is surfing, swimming, and soaking up the sun. This is partially true, but I am here to tell you I don’t do any of the above. I have never been on a surfboard in my life. LOL!

What is your favorite Golden State splurge? Driving to Santa Barbara and staying at the beautiful, luxurious Bacara, or spending a weekend at El Encanto, or visiting my dear friend Kristi Ullman at her amazing ranch in Santa Ynez. Another absolute favorite is driving to Big Sur and having a recuperative stay at the gorgeous Post Ranch Inn.

Time for a road trip—where are you going? Jump in the car and drive to Ojai to enjoy a much more leisurely and deeply artistic environment.

If you could decree an official state culinary experience, what would it be? The incredible fried oysters at L.A.’s Shu Restaurant at the top of The Glen.

What is your favorite way to play in California? To drive down to Santa Monica’s Shutters on the Beach, have breakfast overlooking the ocean, rent two bicycles for myself and my husband, and ride down the amazing boardwalk toward Venice.

Where would you go for the ultimate shopping spree in California? Beverly Hills’ Rodeo Drive. Nothing compares.

Best California song? “California Dreamin” by the Mamas & the Papas.

How would your California dream day unfold? Having my English breakfast tea at Starbucks. Taking a 3-mile walk with a friend. Having breakfast at the Hotel Bel-Air. Buying a million things on Rodeo Drive. Having a proper English tea at the Peninsula hotel. Getting dressed in one of my new outfits to go to dinner with my husband at Mélisse in Santa Monica. Finally, to end the night, come home and cuddle with my husband and watch a great TCM classic movie.
