Chef Matt Horn can boast of a unique training ground for his Michelin-recognized Horn Barbecue: He taught himself how to barbecue in his grandmother’s back yard in Fresno. Over the years, he distilled his approach to the irresistible comfort food as a marriage of distinctive styles: Central Texas, the Black South, and California cuisine.
The Southern California–born chef now showcases his self-taught skills in Oakland, where Horn Barbecue has earned a long list of accolades, including a James Beard Award Finalist nomination and a Michelin Bib Gourmand. Horn Barbecue just opened a new location in nearby Lafayette, and another is on the way in Sacramento.
The chef and cookbook author (Horn Barbecue and Kowbird) also shares his talents at events such as the Healdsburg Wine & Food Experience in May 2025.
Here, Horn shares his favorite places to play in California, and where he goes to find more culinary inspiration:
Where do you live? I live in Oakland.
Why there? I’m drawn to the vibrant energy of the Bay Area, with its rich cultural diversity, innovative spirit, and close proximity to both the city and nature. It’s where my roots are, and it has been the foundation for my journey in both business and life.
Who or what is your greatest California love? The food scene. The culinary diversity here—from farm-to-table to the innovative food culture—is unmatched and constantly inspires me.
What is the biggest misperception about Californians? A common misperception is that all Californians are laid-back and superficial. While there's certainly a relaxed vibe, people here are hard-working, driven, and deeply passionate about their craft, whether in business or their personal lives. We also have great barbecue in California.
What is the stereotype that most holds true? That Californians are health-conscious and into fitness. From the emphasis on healthy eating to the outdoors culture, people here are invested in well-being and living an active lifestyle.
What is your favorite Golden State splurge? My favorite splurge is fine dining experiences. California is home to so many exceptional restaurants that fuse creativity with quality ingredients, and I’m always excited to experience new culinary innovations.
Time for a road trip—where are you going? I’d head to Napa Valley for a relaxing weekend of great wine, food, and scenic views. It's the perfect place to unwind and recharge.
If you could decree an official state culinary experience, what would it be? It would be California barbecue—not just traditional styles, but an innovative fusion of smoked meats, unique marinades, and fresh local produce, showcasing the state's diverse culinary influences.
What is your favorite way to play in California? Outdoor adventures. Whether it's hiking in the hills, fishing, or exploring the many national parks, I love the variety of natural beauty the state offers.
Where would you go for the ultimate shopping spree in California? For the ultimate shopping spree, I'd head to Beverly Hills’ Rodeo Drive—it’s the place to find high-end luxury and exclusive designer brands.
Best California song? The best California song is “California Love” by Tupac. It perfectly captures the allure and iconic essence of the state.
How would your California dream day unfold? My dream day in California would start with a sunrise hike in the hills, followed by brunch at a local farm-to-table spot, then a relaxing afternoon by the beach, and ending with an evening at a top-tier restaurant and a glass of wine, enjoying creative, locally sourced dishes.
