California beaches are vast and varied—whether you’re looking for fluffy white sand, a secluded cove, or giant boulders to scale at low tide, the state’s coastline is an embarrassment of riches. There’s a beach for every vacation vibe.
Southern California Beaches
Southern California’s beaches are the heart of California surf culture, renowned for their year-round sunshine, expansive sandy shores, and bustling piers. The SoCal coast (short for Southern California) begins in San Diego County, featuring iconic spots like La Jolla Shores and the vibrant beach towns of Encinitas and Oceanside. From there, it stretches north through Orange County, home to legendary shores such as Laguna Beach and Huntington Beach. The journey continues to Los Angeles County, where you’ll find some of the state’s most famous destinations, including the vibrant Venice Beach, the roller coaster–filled Santa Monica Pier, and the rocky shores of Malibu.
Planning a trip to L.A. or San Diego? Several of these sandy sites are conveniently located just miles from landmark locations. Extend your theme park vacation to Universal Studios, Disneyland, or LEGOLAND with a beach day just a short drive away.
If you’re headed inland, the summer months open Swim Beach in Big Bear, which provides lifeguards and doesn’t require a summer-long membership for access.

Central California Beaches
The beaches of the Central Coast are next-level destinations for every mood. Relax after a spa day in Santa Barbara, find a stretch of sand near a quality tasting room, or settle in at Rincon Point in Carpinteria to watch surfers ride the waves.
Beginning in Oxnard and Ventura, the Central Coast traces Highway 1, also known as the Pacific Coast Highway, north through the vineyards of Santa Ynez and San Luis Obispo, then winds along the dramatic cliffs of Cambria, Monterey, and beyond. Whether you detour through Big Sur or stop at photo-worthy spots like Hearst Castle and the Madonna Inn, these destinations offer ideal coastal breaks.
If you’re looking to spot a little sea life, this stretch of land offers up-close glimpses of life on (and under) the sea. Check out the tide pools of Pismo Beach, the blubbery elephant seal rookery near San Simeon, and the otters of Morro Bay.
Thirty miles north of Big Sur is the Point Reyes National Seashore, and home to the beloved Point Reyes Lighthouse usually surrounded by gorgeous rolling fog through the months of July through September.
Further up the coastline, the state is defined by a collection of rivers, many of which boast their own spectacular beaches. Check out Goat Rock Beach, where the Russian River meets the Pacific Ocean, and Monte Rio Beach, the largest public beach along the river in Sonoma County.

Northern California Beaches
Up north, the vibe shifts to hidden beaches along rugged coastlines. Discover quiet, tucked-away spots here perfect for wandering and unplugging. Get lost amongst the rocks of Mendocino Headlands State Park, enjoy the nation’s largest salmon bbq in Fort Bragg, and marvel at the ancient lighthouses that dot the Northern California coast from Shelter Cove and Eureka to Battery Point Lighthouse in Crescent City, and can only be reached during low tide.
North Coast beaches were made for cozy sweaters, beachcombing along shores like Glass Beach (look, don’t touch), and epic whale watching.
The north is also home to many non-coastal beaches; there are 40 beaches just on Lake Tahoe including one (allegedly) named after a card shark. Plumas County has a collection of serene lake beaches on Lake Almanor and Lake Siskiyou’s beach in Mount Shasta offers clear waters with mountain views.

Best Time to Visit California Beaches
Every season offers something different for a day on a California beach. The classic spring and summer seasons provide warm sands great for playing in the Pacific Ocean. Even during the fall, the sunny southern shores stay pretty warm long into October. Plus, there are plenty of south-facing beaches (like Santa Cruz) where the orientation creates the perfect spot for warmer waters. Winter means quieter shores perfect for long hikes, strolls along the coast, holiday boat parades, and beach sledding on the sand berms in spots like Zuma, Hermosa, and Huntington.
California Beach Safety Tips
Before heading out on your next beach trip, monitor the weather and water quality, and check for posted signs about rip currents or local marine life. Obey warning signs and flags, and always check the state’s official Safe to Swim website and the Heal the Bay Beach Report Card. To find out if a California beach has a lifeguard, check the California State Parks’ Swim Near a Lifeguard page for seasonal tower operations.
