Born in Huntington Beach, supermodel Jasmine Tookes strutted her way to the top of the runway world shortly after she booked her first ad campaign back in 2010. Her career further took flight as one of Victoria’s Secret’s most popular stars, and she’s enjoyed a relationship with the powerhouse brand spanning from her early days of modeling to her celebrated walk in its high-profile, star-studded runway return in October 2024.
Along the way, Tookes has also successfully spread her wings in the business world. In 2016, the entrepreneur launched the JOJA lifestyle and activewear brand along with cofounder, friend, and fellow supermodel Josephine Skriver.
Here, the young mom and fashion icon shares what inspires her throughout her home state, from its captivating beach sunsets to the hikes that kick her days into high gear.
Where do you live? I live in a peaceful part of Los Angeles, close to the coast and surrounded by nature. It’s such a beautiful area with tree-lined streets, gorgeous homes, and an amazing balance of peace and energy. I love the proximity to everything, whether it’s the beach, hiking trails, or incredible restaurants. It feels like a hidden gem tucked into the heart of L. A.
Why there? I chose this area because it feels like an oasis in the middle of a big city. It’s close enough to everything I need for work and play, but still offers a calm and relaxing environment for my family and me. It’s very suburban, which is similar to how I remember growing up. I can go from a photoshoot to a quiet dinner at home without feeling the chaos of the city.
Who or what is your greatest California love? It has to be the beach at sunset. There’s something magical about the golden light hitting the ocean, especially in places like Malibu or Laguna Beach. It’s calming and energizing all at once. Those moments always remind me how lucky I am to live in such a beautiful state.
What is the biggest misperception about Californians? That we’re all laid-back and don’t work hard! California is full of incredibly driven people who are shaping industries, whether it’s tech, fashion, or entertainment. Sure, we love our beach days and outdoor adventures, but that doesn’t mean we’re not hustling behind the scenes.
What is the stereotype that most holds true? The love for health and wellness is real. You’ll see people hiking, running, and practicing yoga everywhere. I think Californians really embrace that balance between taking care of their bodies and minds while enjoying the beauty of the outdoors. And yes, avocado toast is definitely a thing!
What is your favorite Golden State splurge? A luxurious spa day at the Ojai Valley Inn. There’s nothing like unwinding in their serene spa, surrounded by mountains and lush landscapes. I love their facials and massages, and it’s the perfect way to recharge and indulge in some self-care.
Time for a road trip—where are you going? I’d start with a morning drive to Napa Valley for some wine tasting at my favorite vineyard, Promontory. I’d spend the afternoon exploring charming towns like Yountville, where I’d grab lunch at Bouchon Bakery. From there, I’d head down the coast to Big Sur, staying at the Post Ranch Inn with its stunning views. A sunset dinner at Nepenthe overlooking the cliffs would be the perfect ending. California has so many scenic roads, from Highway 1 to hidden spots like Pfeiffer Beach with its purple sand, so it’s a dream for road trips.
If you could decree an official state culinary experience, what would it be? A fresh, farm-to-table meal with locally sourced ingredients. California is rich in agriculture, so it would highlight the best of what the state has to offer, from avocados and artichokes to fresh seafood and wine. The setting would be outdoors, under the stars, surrounded by vineyards or an ocean view.
What is your favorite way to play in California? I love to stay active, so I’m all about hiking. One of my favorite spots is the Los Leones trail in Pacific Palisades. It has breathtaking views of the Pacific Ocean.
Where would you go for the ultimate shopping spree in California? I’d head to Beverly Hills’ Golden Triangle, where I’d spend the day browsing iconic stores on Rodeo Drive.
Best California song? “California” by Phantom Planet, the opening song from The OC. Growing up in Orange County, this song always reminds me of California and takes me back to that time. It perfectly captures the coastal vibe, the energy, and the laid-back yet exciting feeling that makes California so special.
How would your California dream day unfold? My perfect day would start with an early morning hike at Temescal Canyon for those amazing ocean views, followed by breakfast at Gjusta in Venice for their delicious pastries and coffee. Then I’d head to Malibu for a beach day, paddleboarding in the morning and lounging in the sand in the afternoon. After soaking up some sun, I’d grab a late lunch at Nobu Malibu with friends; it’s hard to beat that sushi with a view. In the evening, I’d unwind with a sunset dinner at Geoffrey’s, and I’d end the day with a cozy bonfire on the beach under the stars. Pure California bliss!
